Hi All we have a very productive day at The Dairy garden.
Weeding was, oh so easy, with all the recent rain . Robert and Tyrrell constructed a netting cover (thanks Joan for the net) for the winter brassica bed so we will try to see if that holds the white moths at bay. Rob got stuck into the banana tree and one brach was broken which has some small banana on it which Dahl is taking home to cook up (recipe to follow). Mary hand weeded this bed so it should be ready to rip. Dahl planted some more carrots seedlings in Bed 6 and scattered some blue Cone flower seeds., set aside bed 5 for manure workshop. Harvested some radishes and planted some more seeds in BED 9. Someone has scrapped the back bed maybe thinking it was onion weed but has raked over the garlic crop. Pruned the fruit trees, replanted some lost seedlings (brush turkey at it again) A good tip I heard was to put a mirror in your garden as the turkeys are very territorial and they will stay away from the garden if they se another (themselves!) Great garden today with Syd. We managed to plant out the remaining seedlings of kale and spinach and got 3 more trays started with pak choy, leeks (King Richard so they better be good!) and another round of radish seeds.
Please check the sign in book to see where everything is. We moved the wire bean support to the front bed 4 where Syd planted some broad beans and sweet peas next to it. Its a busy bed as we also put the kale in the end of it. The bed behind this -BED 5 we are leaving for the green manure workshop to use and it will feed the soil and be ready to plant out in August with nitrogen hungry crops. We cut up and dug the beans remains back into the soil to use the nitrogen. BED 8 has the brussel sprouts and they are now about 5' tall so we need to get a mozzie net (Joan?) and cover it before the moths appear. BED 9 has some potatoes but is basically wasted and is ready to have the new seedlings go in over the next month so some weeding and prep on that one at the next meet. Worms very happy so thanks to Bernadette and Steve for looking after them. Ready for some whipper snippering (Jan?) if you can organise this as the grass has taken off so we need to have it cut back in-between the beds. Syd took some calendular plants home and the last of the yellow beans. |

Herb Spiral now has some catnip, wormwood and sage plants. be careful when you weed it incase you are digging up a good herb.
I have a passionfruit waiting for a good spot to go in- any suggestions? Helen doesn't think its good around the cage as it takes the light from the seedlings. Jobs for May: if you go down please think about these jobs that need to be done : 1.Water, water ,water- if it hasn't rained in the last week then please make this a priority. We all saw how everything took off after the summer rain. Citrus need a good ,slow soak for 15 mins once a week. When you first arrive set the hose at at th ease of each one and you can just move the whose through out the morning. 2. Weed the beds with seedlings and productive food in first . At the moment these are BED 9 Asparagus bed with radish in and BED7 next to the boat with new brussel sprouts in. (We will net this bed in a few weeks time- Joan have you got a net?) and BED 6 (check sign in book cover for bed layout) which has carrot and peel. Don't feed carrot as it causes them to split. 3. Collect worm wee, dilute and feed on Back Bed A (BBA) which has garlic and needs lots of feeding and water, then citrus and rest of garden. 4. Compost, put your veggie scraps in and then turn the bin over and add some green and brown matter and a few twigs to stop it compressing. it also needs a few litres of water and air. 5. Seed raising- in the cage we have some broccoli, spinach kale and radish seedlings on the go. When they are 2 inches tall approx they can go into bed1 and 4.(probably in another 3-4 weeks) 6. beans- they are nearly finished so please pull out, cut up and PUT BACK into the bed. They are nitrogen RICH and so feed the soil ready for the next crops. Kiah Update: I have heard that they will have a community garden in which will compliment ours not replace it. We could split the produce between 2 sites as they might have more sun than ours. I think they are going to have lots of herbs and fruit trees but will wait and see. National Tree Day Sunday 27th JULY- at Warners Park. We could use this to sign up some more members and maybe sell some produce. i will see if we can have a stall and maybe to cakes or sell seedlings (Mandy can we) |
