Message From Janet
Great day in the garden, despite the freezing cold. The boys extended the asparagus bed and planted some radish seedlings. Joan made some beautiful compost and we put some into the extended beds. Mary put in some seeds of kale, broccoli and we spread some poppy seeds into the new bed. Please check the sign in book to see which beds have seeds in them. The bed next to the boat now has brussel sprout seedlings in which Richard and Rob planted. We are going to net this bed and see if we can get a good crop from the brassicaceae. What are brassicaceae?? "Cruciferous vegetables are vegetables of the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae). These vegetables are widely cultivated, with many genera, species, and cultivars being raised for food production such as cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli and similar green leaf vegetables. The family takes its alternate name (Cruciferae, New Latin for "cross-bearing") from the shape of their flowers, whose four petals resemble a cross." Next meet this Wednesday as I am away for the next month. Bernadette has offered to feed the worms-thanks honey. We have some surprise arrivals in the garden with an astonishing 10 foot avocado tree appearing today and a group of paw paw trees heading our way. If anyone has a spare passion fruit vine i would love to put that in too. No prize this year from the Easter show this year but thanks to Richard and Joan who put the entry together and Richard for being the best ever delivery person. |
